There are some fantastic photographic venues for outdoor portrait work within a few hours of Boise. The weather is warming up and hopefully some good weather on the horizon so that means outdoor photography!
I love outdoor portrait photography as I’ve mentioned before many times on this blog. I referenced a specific location in a prior post Photography Locations – Grimes Creek, ID. Grimes Creek is fantastic but now I’d like to point out another terrific place that’s definitely a bit more used. That location is Bruneau Sand Dunes State Park in Bruneau, Idaho.
The Bruneau Sand Dunes are only a little over a two hour drive from Boise and offers a number of fantastic photography back drops. I love Bruneau in the evening when the sun is low in the sky and the warm light is nicely reflected off of the sand. There’s almost always a significant wind as well. Perfect!
This picture to the right was taken fairly early in the afternoon. The sun is a little more harsh due to the time of day but a little help with some reflectors creates a beautiful shot.
Bruneau Sand Dunes offers a lot of photography all day long if you know how to deal with the sun.
In the mid afternoon the sun changes its angle but there still is a harshness to it. A reflector will definitely mitigate the harsh shadows if you know how to use it.
This example demonstrates a nice balance of light to shadow in the mid afternoon sun of Bruneau Sand Dunes.
I like this capture because it really gives the illusion of desolation. Just over that rise in the road is a big truck parked with a few admirers of Noelle’s modeling skills Can’t really blame them for wanting to watch! At one point during the shoot they came up to ask for her autograph!
The later afternoon sun is fantastic at Bruneau. It definitely becomes less harsh but I still use a reflector for fill light because as you can see on her left side, the sun is still making it’s presence known.
In the evening the sun really becomes more diffused. This example to the left shows just how even the light can be.
I did not use a reflector for this capture and the light is very even across her front. No harsh shadows and the nice backlight makes for a wonderful effect.
Bruneau Sand Dunes is definitely worth an entire day trip. Use every minute of the day and with the right light and modifiers you’ll drive away with more great shots than you’ll know what to do with!
I especially want to thank Noelle Joy for putting up with the incredibly harsh wind conditions and her more than professional efforts to get us a multitude of wonderful captures!
I can’t recommend Noelle Joy more strongly. She is fantastic so book her if you’re able and I guarantee she’ll get you to your vision. You can find her here: Noelle Joy Model Mayhem.
